In 105 AD Cai Lun inveted paper. It's considered "one of the four great inventions" by the Chinese. Cai Lun found that using tree bark, hemp and rags paper could be made.
The Tang Dynasty (from 608-607) produced bamboo paper.
The most known paper is Xuan paper from Jing County (Anhui)-this is used for Chinese painting and calligraphy. This is because it's smooth, white, soft, durable and absorbant.
Us westerners were introduced to paper around the 8th century.
